You want to get one-of-a-kind gifts for your family. But you’ve procrastinated until now. What to do? A 24-hour shopping marathon in Manhattan is one sure-fire way to ensure that everyone on your list gets something unique, and have some fun in the process.
Here’s how to plan the perfect overnight shopping trip to New York City:
Step 1 - Transportation: Amtrak is the only stress-free way to travel from the DC area to New York. (Okay, a private jet into Teterborough, NJ with a driver is pretty good too, but let’s be realistic.)
Step 2 - Book a Hotel: You’d be surprised how many deals are available with little notice this time of year. Here is a selection of bargain hotels The Washington Post picked. Kayak is your best bet for pricing them at the last minute.
Step 3 - Shopping: Pick a bazaar. The New York Times recommends four: Grand Central Holiday Fair, Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Terminal; Union Square Holiday Market; The Holiday Shops at Bryant Park; Holiday Market at Columbus Circle. If you’re shopping for a guy, Daily Candy has several recommendations. And if you’re shopping for a woman, New York Magazine has jewelry tips.
Step 4 - Food: Get a slice. The Serious Eats Pizza Map will keep your lunch budget in check.
