Doug,
Actually, you're right on the money: this is the time to go to Napa. The tourists haven't arrived, the hills are green, and the flowers are blooming. I'll be researching a new book for Lonely Planet this spring and will be exploring the little roads east of the Silverado Trail. Will keep you posted about what I discover. Meanwhile, you'll find plenty of ideas to get you started on the Napa Valley page of the site. Thanks for reading. See you on the road! ---John

JOhn, Great trip, but I think that a road trip to Napa is the best. Driving up Hwy 29 and down Silverado Trail and take some of the cross streets, or go East off the trail towards Lake Beressa. So many great places to see off the main roads. Grab some wine and cheese and stop on the side of a road somewhere to eat and drink.... nothing better...
Thanks for such a great website.
Onward,
Doug

I agree, you've got more options for side trips if you enter Pinnacles from the west, but it's hard to beat Hwy 25's scenery---really, I think it one of Northern California's most beautiful roads. But, you're right about Chalone: it's a great spot for wine-tasting and picnicking, and the rolling hills surrounding the winery are straight out of a Steinbeck novel. Gorgeous.

Thanks for the feedback. See you on the road! ---John

I prefer to enter the Pinnacles from the west entrance, follow highway 146 from Soledad. Chalone Vineyards is nearby and has a wonderful, cool, grassy picnic area and sells fine wine.
