Hi John,

I scoured your "Hotels for Sex" article for a romantic recommendation in Tahoe (my boyfriend loves to ski) for Valentine's Day, but didn't see a one.

Any suggestions for a place that is particularly private, unique, and romantic? Looking for no more than about $450/night.

Thanks!

Hi, Marie. Lavender Hill is a small spa that does fango treatments. It's in a converted cottage, has good service, and a friendly staff. The only drawback is that you can hear road noise in the massage studio. They do fango-mud treatments, not mud-submersion treatments. Whatever you choose, the sooner you book, the better. Many people start making their weekend bookings today (Wednesday): make your appointments asap. Let us know how it goes!

Best,
John

Thanks John! You mention Lavendar Hill on the mud pages. What's your feeling about them? Really appreciate it all the help.

Hello Marie,

Good call on going to Calistoga. Alas, there are practically no traditional mud-bath emporiums that do couples' treatments. There is one place, but it's kind of grungy and I don't want to recommend it publicly.

The closest you'll come is Solage, a brand-spankin'-new spa by the Auberge group. The drawback? They use fango-mud treatments, the kind you add to a tub of water. I much prefer the old-style places (especially Indian Springs) that submerge you in a tub of thick, heavy mud made from volcanic ash. Still, you can sip champagne and be fawned over with top-flight service at Solage, but you won't get the classic experience of feeling like a buried tree root.

For full reviews, check out my mud-bath emporiums page.

Does that help? Let me know if not, and we'll see about coming up with something else.

Thanks for the great tips. My boyfriend and I are doing exactly this and planning a Valentine's getaway next weekend in Calistoga. Where's the best place to get a couples spa treatment that specializes in mud?

Many thanks for all the great reporting!
